There are lots of reasons your period may be late!

Q: My period is late but the pregnancy test is negative. How is it possible?

A: This is possible as delay of periods as there are various factors due to which periods get delayed.

Before discussing the factors I want to make one point very clear that it is normal medical condition for a female having two irregular periods every year. That means not every periodic cycle can be perfect.

Stress also causes late periods in women. Stress can be of any type such as emotional stress due to studies or tension in relationship and depression of any kind. In female athletes, physical stress is responsible for delayed period. Illness, tiredness due to lack of sleep, sexually transmitted disease, rapid variation in body weight and high intensity exercises are also responsible for late period in women.

missed peiord has many reasons

Imbalance in hormones causes delayed period in women and especially in teenagers. It also leads to irregular periods due to which there is growth in body hair and sudden increase in weight. There are also few incidents in which stopping the consumption of birth contraceptive pills causes hormone imbalance which leads to delay of menstrual cycle or periods. Such contraceptive pills are not hundred percent safe and some other contraceptive measures must be used to prevent situation of pregnancy. If you have missed more than two periods without any specific reason then your gynaecology doctor can inspect your ovaries to discover symptoms of hormone imbalance. Blood tests are also done to find out hormone levels. Situation of hormone imbalance can be easily treated in medical science. Complications of thyroid and pituitary gland, adrenal glands and ovaries are also responsible for late periods. But these factors are rarely responsible for a delayed period.

So the next time if you have late periods then don’t worry, possibly it is not due to pregnancy.

Why is my period late?

When a woman misses a period, the first question that comes to mind is why is my period late? The first reason that pops into our minds is pregnancy. However, this is not the only reason that causes late periods. Here is a list of common reasons that would delay periods.

Stress: This can cause our bodies to decrease the production of the hormone ‘GnRH’ which cause us not to menstruate or ovulate.Illness: A sudden and short illness can cause a delay in your periods or even a temporary stoppageSchedule changes: Changing schedules suddenly can throw your body’s internal clock off balance and therefore cause late periods

Medications change: If your doctor prescribes new medication and these results in late periods, this side effect should be reported to the doctor for a change in the medication.

Being overweight: Being overweight can cause a shift in hormonal balance and in so doing cause late periods.

Being underweight: If your body does not have enough body fat, this causes a condition called amenorrhea which can cause stoppage of periods altogether.

Miscalculation: The ‘menstrual cycle’ varies from one person to the next. The average ‘menstrual cycle’ for most women is 28, but this can vary in different women resulting in miscalculation as to when the next period is expected.

Peri –menopause: this is the period of time when a transition is taking place from reproduction age to menopause. It is characterized by heavy periods, less frequent, more frequent or just normal.

Menopause: This is when your body reaches that point where there is lo longer ovulation, in which case the periods would then cease altogether.

Pregnancy: To most women, this is normally the most obvious reason. A pregnancy test would confirm whether your periods are late because of pregnancy.
Why would my periods be late? I believe the above reasons answers this question.
